Viewers turned off by Hollywood writers strike 'may never switch TV on ...

I watch football occasionally and sometimes the nightly news. Period. And I'm tempted to give up on the news because of all the "medical" commercials -- sleep aids, mucus products, and, of course, the ever-present expensive anti-cholesterol drugs. Besides, the network "news" talks about things covered on the Internet 2 days earlier! Use your computer. Read your current events. And let the unionized "entertainment" industry follow the lead of the Titanic...

New cookbook celebrates old Brass Tavern Inn

In 1845 when the Brass Tavern and Inn first opened its doors on the corner of Old Pike and Old Highway in what is now Munster, the journey from this section of Northwest Indiana into Chicago took about a day.Because the journey was hard (travelers could be mired in mud when the dirt roads were wet or cloaked in dust in dry weather), the tavern offered a place to rest and to dine. What made stopping there even better is that Julia Watkins Brass, who owned the Brass Tavern with her husband (and ran it while he was looking for riches in California during the Gold Rush), kept a crock jar full of sugar cookies, and her menus were described by contemporaries as "attractive and delectable." Time moves on.Now the trip from Ridge Road (Old Pike) and Columbia Avenue (Old Highway) in Munster takes less than an hour instead of a day.And the tavern, which in 1864 became the Stallbohm Inn, closed its doors in the 1890s as railroads and paved roads made traveling much easier and eliminated the need for a stagecoach stop. The building burned in 1909; all that is left to mark the site is a bronze historical plaque donated in 1927 by the Julia Watkins Brass Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. But the Brass Tavern and those days still live on, in the memories of those who have heard stories of the inn and in the old recipes handed down by generations of local residents. Now these recipes and more have been collected by the Munster Historical Society and presented, along with photos and stories of early area settlers, in a delightful book titled "The Brass Tavern Cookbook: A Collection of Nostalgic Recipes Commemorating the Establishment in 1845 of The Brass Tavern & Inn, the First Permanent Settlement in Munster, Indiana," compiled by JoAnne Shafer. "The oldest recipes for a baked ham glaze and apple crisp both date back to 1855," says Shafer who, with other members of the society, worked on this project for 12 years.Besides providing a history of the region, the cookbook also tells a story of how the foods we eat have changed (partridge wrapped in vine leaves having been dropped from most menus today) -- and stayed the same.

Real truths at heart of the Creation stories

Can something dead as a rock work its way up to the life cycle of the butterfly? Nasa and evols generally say, just add water and rocks sprout legs and then wings. Immense time allows them to. You can't disprove the theory of wet rocks can live and even fly, would you support their research if they came your door to collect their $20 Billion a year? Rocks are content doing rock things forever, as I see it. DNA is real language. Language, symbols standing in for reality, are the product of conscious minds, always. Evols can't del with that, so censorship is their only way to keep their funding and avoid honest work. Thou shalt not lie. .

Jamie Winstone gets some Phoo Action

Jaime Winstone is living it large. She has beaten up a giant purple gorilla, fallen in love with a gay Buddhist kung fu monk, and pulled out a hefty tranquilliser gun from a pair of magic hot pants. And that's just the beginning. For, as Whitey Action, the high-kicking teen protagonist of the celebrity-bashing satire Phoo Action, the 22-year-old firebrand actress has found in her angry wild-child character a kindred spirit of sorts. "In the real world you can't go round pulling tranquilliser guns out of your pants, though I wish I could," she says, her brown eyes bright with enthusiasm, her slight, pixie-like frame leaning forward on a large armchair in the corner of a swish Central London agency. "But Whitey is an anarchist in a modern day world who's fighting the pressures of bullshit celebrityism, so in a way I can relate to that."

Whitey, she explains, was initially conceived by the Brit-comic guru Jamie Hewlett (Tank Girl, Gorillaz) as a punk sidekick to the martial arts monk Terry Phoo in a mid-1990s comic strip called Get The Freebies.

eBay chief executive set to retire

Ten percent fewer customers visited eBay.com last month than in December 2006, the tracking company Nielsen Online said.

Though eBay has tried to get its most loyal customers to buy more, the overall decline in traffic has depressed business.

Gross merchandise volume -- the total amount of all goods and services sold on eBay.com -- has been growing at a slower pace over the last few years than e-commerce in general, which means that eBay is losing market share, particularly to Amazon.

The expected change of chief executives was first reported by the Wall Street Journal on Tuesday.

Whitman's plans have not been disclosed, but she has been a contributor and fund-raiser for Mitt Romney, a Republican presidential contender. Like Whitman, Romney is a Bain alumnus.

Wall Street analysts and eBay observers have been preparing for Whitman's departure for some time, particularly as eBay's stock price has sagged.

Greece: Women protest in monk sanctuary

THESSALONIKI, Greece—A group of female protesters locked in a land dispute with the Greek Orthodox Church defied a 1,000-year-old ban and entered the all-male Mount Athos monastic sanctuary in northern Greece, a police official said Wednesday.

A police spokesman said on customary condition of anonymity that the small group of nearby villagers, including at least six women, climbed over a fence Tuesday and briefly entered the self-governing peninsula, where women are strictly forbidden.

Parliament member Litsa Amanatidou Paschalidou was among the women who entered the sanctuary. She called it a "purely symbolic act," which was meant to send a message to the church to "pursue policies which serve the public and not its financial interest."

The protesters, who say the monks are making illegal claims on their property, broke away from a rally of more than 400 people and evaded a police cordon, entering Athos grounds.

Baseball Plays Waiting Game With Uniform Start Date

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) -It was sunny and 78 in South Florida on Friday. The Miami baseball players were doing the same thing as their brethren at Nebraska, where it was in the 20s with patches of snow in the outfield of Lincoln's Haymarket Park.

Practice is all they can do. No one is allowed to play games until next Friday.

The new NCAA uniform starting date for Division I baseball was established with the intent to create competitive balance among northern and southern teams.

Miami coach Jim Morris says the rule might be seen as an equalizer, but it unfairly punishes teams in the South.

"We're taking the level of baseball down nationally," Morris said. "We're not bringing it up."

In past years the Hurricanes would have played a half dozen games at this point in February.

RegTel drafts new rules for premium services

A reduction in the maximum spending limits for premium rate phone services is among the proposals contained in RegTel's new draft code of practice.

Under the premium rate regulator's new code, published Tuesday, the maximum spend on 'chat and dating' calls would be reduced from EUR60 to EUR40, while the maximum for 'live' services would go from EUR90 to EUR60. Operators of such services would also have to warn customers when they reach spending thresholds of EUR20 and EUR30 respectively.

Tom Higgins, CEO of Irish Psychics live, was quoted in the Irish Independent on Tuesday as saying: "We've been very unhappy with the code of practice for some time. Our price warning is given at 12 minutes (when EUR28.80 has been spent) and at 24 minutes (EUR57.60)."

Callers to psychic, tarot card and horoscope lines would also have to be informed that such services are for entertainment purposes only.
