| More on the Front Running Class Action Suit
Several people pointed out that although the suit still hasn't appeared in PACER, copies of the complaint are available online, including this one [PDF] at Lextext. Having read it, I'm rather underwhelmed. After the usual lengthy enumeration of alleged misdeeds, the complaint charges Network Solutions (NSI) with fraudulent concealment, and unjust enrichment, while charging ICANN with aiding and abetting fraudulent concealment. I do not purport to be a lawyer (nor do I usually play one on the net), but it's hard to see how the facts, which are not in serious dispute, would support any of these charges. Fraudulent concealment generally involves hiding important information when entering into a contract, e.g., not mentioning your three prior heart attacks when you get life insurance.
A ‘hit job’ on McCain?
When news organizations reported that Mr. McCain had written letters to government regulators on behalf of the lobbyist's client, the former campaign associates said, some aides feared for a time that attention would fall on her involvement. "Mr. McCain, 71, and the lobbyist, Vicki Iseman, 40, both say they never had a romantic relationship. But to his advisers, even the appearance of a close bond with a lobbyist whose clients often had business before the Senate committee Mr. McCain led threatened the story of redemption and rectitude that defined his political identity." The story then goes on to revive the Keating Five savings and loan scandal and suggests that McCain had not been true to the ethical standard he set for himself and the image he cultivated "as the scourge of special interests, a crusader for stricter ethics and campaign finance rules, a man of honor chastened by a brush with shame." It's impossible, based on the Times account, to know whether there was anything improper in McCain's relationship with the lobbyist.

I mean this as a compliment: I can see why drag queens love Kathleen Turner. Unlike the interchangeable blandettes who decorate today's movies, Turner has texture. She has grit and class, she's sexy and regal, she's no-nonsense and divalicious. She's a dame and a Grand Dame. It has nothing to do with the severe rheumatoid arthritis that's roughed her up a bit in the last decade, or the meds that deepened her whisky-hued voice. As she would say, it's about attitude, baby. Turner has attitude to burn. In Toronto last week to promote her autobiography, Send Yourself Roses, Turner strolled off the elevator at the Four Seasons Hotel and took charge. "I'd like an iced tea, let's go to the lounge," she commanded, and had us seated and sated before her PR girls knew she'd left the lobby.

Winter road bills piling up: More than half of 2008 budget already spent and winter’s not over
Mother Nature may put Jackson County highways on a salt-free diet and could strain the entire highway budget by the end of the year.Highway Commissioner Mike Hemp said Tuesday that through Feb. 13 the county has already spent 55 percent of its winter maintenance budget for 2008. That's only from Jan. 1, since the record December snow removal costs were part of the 2007 budget.Winter maintenance costs on county highways through Feb. 13 were $207,121. The 2008 budget available is $380,000, which also needs to cover the beginning of next winter too.Hemp showed the committee the average costs of winter maintenance by month since 1999. The average January costs were $79,110 and the average February costs were $64,016.The average cost in December is $73,653 and the county spent $197,124 in that month alone, Hemp said.

Langkow's passing fancy
Throw in the fact the Calgary Flames were mired in their recently ended five-game losing skid, and it made the situation doubly painful. And then, tack on Langkow's offensive struggles amidst the team's free fall, to boot. It adds up to a whole lot of disappointment. Now, imagine how relieved the centre feels, having set up Kristian Huselius' game-winning goal in Calgary's last-minute 3-2 victory over the Minnesota Wild Tuesday night. Langkow may be quiet and soft-spoken, but takes great pride in being one of the most consistent players you'll find in the NHL. Going four games without a point -- and missing one match due to having his bell rung -- will make any player feel they're not pulling their weight. Langkow admitted yesterday he wasn't happy about not coming through with production while Jarome Iginla and Alex Tanguay were carrying the bulk of the offensive load.
